Free word counter, words, characters, reading time and social limits

Writing tools for analyzing and refining text, starting with the Word Counter. Count words, characters and reading time in real time, check copy against platform limits for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google, and convert case, all in one private tab. Nothing you write is stored or sent anywhere.

What word count tools are actually useful for

A word count by itself is rarely the number that matters. Reading time, character limits, keyword frequency, sentence length and platform-specific requirements are the signals that actually inform editing decisions, and they change depending on where the content is going.

Writing for platforms with character limits

Social captions, video descriptions and SEO metadata all have hard limits that determine whether content gets cut off, rejected or penalized. YouTube title, description and tag limits differ from TikTok caption limits, which differ from Instagram bio, LinkedIn post and Twitter character counts, which differ from Google's guidelines for title tags and meta descriptions. Checking against all of them at once, as you write, catches issues before publishing.

Reading time and density as editorial signals

An article estimated at 12 minutes to read may be too long for its target context. A paragraph where the same phrase appears five times may need variation. A post at 1,800 words may satisfy a minimum length for search visibility. These metrics don't make editorial decisions, they surface information that informs them, without requiring a separate analytics tool or submission.

Private drafting for sensitive content

Client copy, embargoed articles, NDA-covered drafts and personal writing can be analyzed without risk of the content being stored or transmitted. Every count and case conversion runs in browser memory. Nothing is sent to a server and closing the tab clears the content entirely.
