How to use the Video to MP3 Converter
This tool extracts the audio track from any video file and saves it as a high-quality MP3, entirely in your browser. No account is needed, no file is uploaded to a server, and no watermark is added to the output. The converter works on desktop and mobile and continues to function offline once the page has loaded for the first time.
- Select your video, drag and drop a video file onto the zone, or click Browse. MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM and MKV formats are all supported, up to 500 MB.
- Choose a bitrate, select 128, 192, or 320 kbps. 192 kbps is the recommended default for music and general use. Your choice is remembered between sessions.
- Set a time range (optional), if you only want part of the audio, enter a start and end time in HH:MM:SS format. Leave both fields empty to extract the full audio track.
- Set the output filename, the filename field is pre-filled with the name of your video. Change it to anything you prefer; the
.mp3extension is added automatically. - Click Extract MP3, the first time you use this tool, it downloads a one-time local audio file (~30 MB). Subsequent uses load instantly from your local cache.
- Download your file, click the Download MP3 button to save the result. No watermark is added. The file is built in your browser and discarded from memory when you close the tab.
Understanding audio bitrate
Bitrate measures how much audio data is stored per second. A higher bitrate preserves more of the original sound but creates a larger file. 128 kbps works well for speech, podcasts and recordings where file size matters more than audio richness. 192 kbps strikes a practical balance for most music, the difference from 320 kbps is inaudible on typical earphones. 320 kbps is the highest standard MP3 quality, recommended when you need archival-quality output or plan to process the audio further. Keep in mind that the output can never exceed the quality of the original audio track in the video, selecting a high bitrate does not enhance a low-quality source.
Privacy and data handling
Your video file never leaves your device. The extraction runs in your browser without any server involvement. This approach is identical to how the Image Compressor handles images: all processing happens in your browser tab, not on a remote machine. Your file is held in browser memory only for the duration of the operation and is cleared as soon as you close the tab.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video file uploaded to a server?
No. Your video file never leaves your device. The entire extraction runs inside your browser. PureTools has no server infrastructure to receive files. You can even turn off your internet connection after the page has loaded and the tool will continue working. Your file is processed entirely in your browser's memory and discarded when you close the tab. Your data is never used to train AI models or improve machine learning systems.
What video formats are supported?
The tool supports the five most common video formats: MP4, MOV (Apple QuickTime), AVI (Audio Video Interleave), WEBM, and MKV (Matroska). These cover the vast majority of video files recorded by cameras, smartphones, screen recorders and video editors. The audio track is extracted from whichever format you upload and saved as a standard MP3 file. No watermark is added.
How do I extract only part of the audio?
Use the Start and End time fields in the time range section. Enter times in HH:MM:SS format (for example, 0:01:30 for one minute and thirty seconds), or just type the number of seconds (for example, 90). Leave both fields empty to extract the full audio track. Only the portion between your start and end times will appear in the downloaded MP3, so you can isolate a song chorus, a speech segment or any other clip with precision.
What does the bitrate setting do?
Bitrate controls the amount of audio data stored per second in the MP3 file, directly affecting sound quality and file size. 128 kbps produces smaller files suitable for voice recordings and podcasts. 192 kbps is the recommended balanced setting for music and general use. 320 kbps delivers the highest quality output with the largest file size, preferred when audio fidelity matters most. If you are unsure, start with 192 kbps, it covers most listening scenarios without producing excessively large files.
Will the MP3 quality match the original video's audio?
The output quality is limited by two factors: the quality of the original audio track in your video, and the bitrate you select. If the source video has low-quality audio, selecting 320 kbps will not improve it. Conversely, if your video has high-quality audio, a lower bitrate will discard some fine detail. For music videos recorded in high quality, 192 or 320 kbps will preserve most of the original fidelity. No watermark is added to the audio output at any bitrate setting.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes. The maximum input file size is 500 MB per video. This limit exists to protect your device's memory, processing very large files requires holding the entire file in RAM. For typical use cases such as a music video (50–200 MB) or a short lecture recording (100–400 MB), this limit is rarely reached. If you need to extract audio from a very long recording, use the time range fields to export only the section you need rather than processing the entire file.
Does the tool work offline?
Yes, after your first visit. PureTools saves the tool locally on your device so it can be used later without an internet connection. The audio extractor downloads a one-time local file (~30 MB) on first use and then caches it in your browser. On all subsequent visits, including offline, the page loads instantly from your local cache and the extraction runs entirely without a network connection. For the most reliable offline use, open the merger once while online, then keep the browser cache intact before using it without a connection.
Is my data erased when I close the tab?
Yes, completely. Your video file exists only in your browser's memory for the duration of your session. Your output filename preference and bitrate setting are saved only for the current session and erased automatically when you close the tab. No file content, no video data and no personal information is ever written to disk by this tool or transmitted to any server. Closing the tab clears everything instantly.
