Understanding the 2026 World Cup bracket format

The 2026 tournament uses a new structure that affects how the bracket works compared to previous editions. With 48 teams split into 12 groups of 4, the bracket is larger and includes an additional round.

  • Group stage: 12 groups, each playing 3 matches (6 total per group). Top 2 teams in each group advance automatically. The 8 best third-place finishers also advance, giving 32 total knockout participants.
  • Round of 32: new in 2026. 32 teams compete in single-elimination matches to reach the Round of 16.
  • Round of 16 through Final: standard single-elimination bracket. Matches follow FIFA's fixed seeding table (Match 73 through Match 104) so the bracket path is determined in advance.

The third-place team selection is one of the trickier aspects of the 2026 format. Eight of the twelve third-place teams advance based on record (points, goal difference, goals scored), but the specific group pools that each slot feeds into depend on which groups produced the advancing third-place teams. This predictor uses a deterministic fill order to give you a clean editable bracket without requiring you to simulate group tiebreaker arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create my own World Cup 2026 bracket?

Yes. You can create your own prediction by choosing the winner, runner-up and third-place team for every group, then selecting each knockout winner until the final. The tool keeps the official 2026 World Cup structure, so your simulation stays realistic while still letting you test your own champion path. Your picks stay in the browser session, so you can experiment with different group outcomes and reset the bracket without saving anything to a server.

Does the tool use live scores?

No. This predictor is intentionally manual. It does not call a live score API and it does not require maintenance during matches. You control every group placement and every knockout winner, which keeps the page fast, private and usable offline. For match times and venues, see the World Cup 2026 schedule.

Why are third-place teams shown separately?

The 2026 World Cup has 12 groups. The top two teams in each group qualify automatically, and the eight best third-place teams also advance. That creates 32 knockout teams. Showing third-place teams separately makes the new format easier to understand and lets you test different bracket scenarios. This mirrors the tournament format and keeps the bracket transparent when multiple group scenarios can change the identity of the final qualifiers.

Is my bracket private?

Yes. Your picks are stored only in the current browser tab through sessionStorage. PureTools has no backend and receives no bracket data. When you copy a snapshot link, the data is encoded after the # symbol in the URL, which browsers do not send to servers during normal page requests. Closing the tab clears the temporary session picks. Your data is never used to train AI models or improve machine learning systems.

Can I use this on mobile?

Yes. The group cards, third-place selector and bracket rounds are designed for phone screens. The bracket scrolls naturally by round, buttons are large enough to tap, and the champion summary stays near the bracket without requiring a desktop layout. The bracket controls are built for touch, with stacked panels and large tap targets so you can make picks from a phone during matches.

How do I download the bracket as an image?

Click the Download bracket PNG button below the knockout bracket. The tool renders the full bracket, all rounds from the Round of 32 through to the Final, as a single PNG image you can save to your device. This is useful for sharing your prediction on social media, group chats or watch party discussions. Make sure you have selected winners for all completed rounds before exporting so the image captures your full prediction.

Can I share my bracket prediction with others?

Yes. Click Copy bracket link to generate a shareable URL that encodes your entire bracket, group picks, third-place selections and knockout winners, after the # symbol in the address. When someone opens the link, the bracket loads with your picks pre-filled. Because hash fragments are not sent in HTTP requests, your prediction data never touches a server. You can also click Copy full bracket to get a plain-text summary that is easy to paste into a message, email or social post.
