Frequently asked questions

Does this Image Cropper add a watermark?

No. PureTools Image Cropper adds absolutely no watermark to your cropped images. The output is a clean file with only the pixels you selected, nothing else. Many online cropping tools insert a visible or invisible watermark; this tool does not. Your image is processed entirely in your browser using the Canvas API and is never sent to any server.

Which image formats can I upload and download?

You can upload JPG, PNG and WEBP files. When downloading your cropped result, you can choose between PNG (lossless, best for graphics and text), JPG (smaller file size, best for photos), or WEBP (modern format, best balance of quality and size). The quality slider lets you fine-tune JPG and WEBP output from 50% to 100%. Your data is never used to train AI models or improve machine learning systems.

What aspect ratios are available?

The tool offers seven preset aspect ratios: Free (no constraint), 1:1 (square, ideal for Instagram profile pictures and thumbnails), 16:9 (widescreen, standard for YouTube and presentations), 4:3 (standard photo and monitor ratio), 3:2 (classic DSLR photo ratio), 9:16 (portrait, ideal for Instagram Stories, TikTok and Reels), and 4:5 (Instagram portrait post). You can switch ratios at any time and the crop selection adjusts automatically.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Your image never leaves your device. The entire cropping process runs client-side in your browser using the Canvas API and Web Workers. No data is sent to any server, no account is required, and nothing is stored after you close the tab. PureTools has no backend, it is a 100% static site. Data is erased when you close the tab. Because processing is local, the upload speed of your internet connection does not affect the resize, and private photos never need to leave your device.

What is the maximum file size?

The tool accepts images up to 50 MB. This limit exists to protect your device's RAM during processing. For most photos and graphics this limit is well above what you will encounter. The actual crop and encode operation is handled in a background Web Worker so your browser remains fully responsive during processing.

Can I crop on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The Image Cropper is fully touch-enabled. You can drag the crop handles, move the selection, and draw a new crop area using your finger or stylus on any smartphone or tablet. All buttons meet the 44 px minimum tap target size recommended for mobile usability. The crop box is designed for touch input, and the controls stack below the preview so the main action stays close to the image on narrow screens.

Why does the crop area show a grid?

The grid inside the crop area is a rule-of-thirds overlay, a photography composition guide that divides the frame into nine equal parts. Placing your subject at the intersections of these lines tends to produce more visually balanced images. The grid lines are display-only and do not appear in the downloaded file.

What is the difference between PNG, JPG, and WEBP output?

PNG is a lossless format, every pixel is preserved exactly, making it ideal for screenshots, logos, and graphics with transparent backgrounds. JPG discards some data to achieve a smaller file size; it is best for photographs where perfect pixel accuracy is not critical. WEBP is a modern format that offers smaller file sizes than PNG and JPG at equivalent quality. Use the quality slider to control JPG and WEBP compression level. To further reduce file size after cropping, use the Image Compressor.

How do I crop to an exact pixel size?

Select the aspect ratio that matches your target dimensions and adjust the crop selection. The dimensions display above the Crop button shows the exact output size in pixels as you resize. For a precise final size, crop the area you want and then use the Image Resizer to scale down to exact pixel dimensions.

Are my cropped images saved after I close the tab?

No. PureTools stores nothing between sessions. All image data lives in temporary browser memory and is freed when you close the tab. No file content, crop settings, or personal data are ever written to localStorage, cookies, or any server. Download your result before closing the tab. A fresh visit starts with an empty editor; previous images, crop rectangles, previews and download URLs are not restored from long-term storage.
